There are a lot of ways to remove unwanted body hair. One of the most effective ways is by using an IPL hair removal system.
Although it’s often referred to as laser hair removal, IPL, or intense pulsed light, the treatment does not involve lasers, but rather light that have been filtered at the proper wavelengths so as to facilitate the removal of body hair. It sounds very similar to the idea of lasers, but it isn’t quite the same.
I’m sure I don’t speak for everyone, but most of you probably aren’t all that familiar with how the treatment works, let alone how to go about picking the right model.
I won’t go into the details of how IPL treatment works. Suffice it to say that it uses carefully filtered light to penetrate just below the skin, damaging the cells. This allows the skin cells to repair and rejuvenate themselves. IPL treatment is not just used for hair removal, but can also be used to heal skin that has been damaged by the sun or blood vessels.
IPL is not a miracle cure, and it will not work overnight. I cannot help you weigh your options. You will have to do your research and perhaps consult a doctor or a dermatologist to see if IPL treatment might be right for you.
If, however, you are ready to begin treatment, I can guide you towards making an intelligent and wise investment.
Things to Consider
There are quite a few things you need to know before you consider buying an IPL treatment. This does not work like a razor or epilator, and having some foreknowledge will go a long way towards ensuring you are satisfied with your purchase.
1. Skin Color
Do to the limitations of IPL treatment; it is not compatible with darker skin colors. Most Asian, European and Middle Eastern women should be able to use it, but African, Indian, and most Hispanic and Native American women will have too dark of skin for it to work.
2. Hair Color
Although IPL hair treatment can work for women with blond or red hair, darker-haired women will experience better results. Thus, IPL treatment is most recommended for women with brown or black hair.
3. Lamp Life
The life of an IPL system is determined by the number of flashes each bulb is rated for. Typical lamps can handle anything from 1500 to 5000 flashes, but this number can vary dramatically.
4. Slow Results
While the results of IPL treatment are far more permanent than epilators or razors and you don’t have to remove hairs as often, it can take several weeks or months for you to achieve the results you want.
Some IPL hair removal systems are less than $200. Others are considerably more. Buying a higher-quality system can mean quicker results, but the difference in price can be significant.

There was a little bit of contention over what to choose for our editor’s pick. We liked that the Me My Elos Syneron PRO ULTRA Hair Removal System can be used with darker skin colors, but we feel that its price may be too prohibitive for a lot of people.
Therefore, we recommend the Braun Gillette Venus Silk-Expert IPL 5001 Hair Removal System. It is a very effective IPL system, and it is not overly expensive.

Veet Infini’Silk Pro Light-Based IPL Hair Removal System
IPL hair removal systems come in a variety of styles, meant to appeal to women with significantly different needs. The Veet Infini’Silk Pro Light-Based IPL Hair Removal System is another handheld IPL system quite a bit like the Flash&Go. It’s convenient design makes it perfect for reaching hard-to-reach places, unlike the iLight or the Lumia.
Like the Flash&Go, the Infini’Silk is rated for up to 5,000 flashes, and is also designed for easy cartridge replacement. With Veet Inifini’Silk, you can expect to see results in as few as four or five treatments, with permanent hair reduction starting to take place after ten or so uses. Like the Flash&Go, it also has a 4 cm2 treatment radius, allowing you to reach smaller areas of your body – such as your lips – as well as larger ones.
Like the Flash&Go, it can take a while to reach all parts of your body, and you will have to wait several months before you start to see noticeable results, making patience a necessity. Still, this is a very good product, and I see no clear-cut advantage between this and the Flash&Go.
HKGT Mlay M3 Home IPL Hair Removal System
There are a surprising number of IPL hair systems within a similar price range, and while there aren’t a lot of substantial differences between the HKGT Mlay M3 IPL Hair Removal System and the two that came before it, there is one substantial difference: the length of the bulb.
The HKGT is similar to the Philips Lumea in that it offers a very long lasting lamp – in this case, and it’s rated for up to 120,000 flashes, meaning it will last for years to come with no bulb replacement – definitely a convenience.
Although the bulb isn’t rated as high as the Lumia, it does have an advantage over it with the presence of a handle, however, which makes it easier to handle the IPL system. Like the other IPL systems, you should expect to see results in four to five treatments.
The first three should be handled once a week, with another four to six treatments every other week. From then on, plan on treating once every couple of months to touch up. Of course, you should consult your manual thoroughly before beginning any treatment.

Philips SC1981/50 Lumea Comfort
Buying an IPL hair removal system can be a major investment, but it is cheaper than going to a salon on a regular basis. If you are serious about IPL treatment, buying your machine is the best way to go.
If you’re looking for an introductory IPL system, then the Philips Norelco Lumea Comfort IPL Hair Removal System is a good place to start. Whether you have hair on the face or body, IPL hair removal is engineered to take care of all your needs.
The actual process of using this technology is quite involved as I indicated in the beginning, and describing the entire process is quite complicated.
However, the Philips Lumea is designed to be used every two weeks, and results should be immediately evident after about two months After four treatments, you should see a 75% reduction in your hairs. The Philips Lumea IPL hair removal system comes with a two-year warranty and has a 60-day money back guarantee.
Since you should witness results within that time, you will be ale to tell if the treatment is working of or you need to find a different way to deal with your unwanted hairs. The system is good for up to 200,000 flashes, so it should be good for a minimum of four years, making it an excellent investment.
Silk’n Flash&Go Hair Removal Device
If you’re looking for a handheld hair removal device that is simple and convenient to use, the Silk’n Flash&Go Hair Removal Device is a good bet. It has an easy-to-grip handle that offers you plenty of control.
The Flash&Go has a spot size of 4 cm2, making it ideal to remove hair from any part of your body, from the armpits and legs to bikini area. The Flash&Go can be run on battery or plugged in, so you can use it anywhere. The lamp is rated for 5,000 flashes, and most women report seeing results in as little two to four treatments, or three months.
If you’re worried whether this treatment is safe, it has been approved y the FDA and by Health Canada. It uses pulse speed technology, so it works effectively, helping to remove your hairs with a minimum of hassle. If you’re tired of expensive spa visits, the Silk’n Flash&Go may be your answer.

Remington iLIGHT Pro Hair Removal System
Remington is brand well known for their razors, shavers and trimming products. It’s not that surprising, then, that they also have IPL hair removal products. The Remington iLIGHT Pro Hair Removal System is designed to provide a comfortable and mostly pain-free way to offer the near-permanent reduction in your hairs, eliminating the constant need for shaving.
You should be able to see results after just a couple of weeks, and a mere three treatments should provide six months of results. Each bulb is rated for 1500 flashes or approximately ten full-body treatments. However, the iLight comes with three replacement bulbs, offering up to 40 treatments. A two-year warranty ensures that your product will last you a long time.
Because each lamp is only rated for about 1500 flashes, it will not last nearly as long as the Philips Lumea. However, it does not require biweekly treatments, so if you’re looking for a more convenient option, the iLight is a good bet.

Braun Gillette Venus Silk-Expert IPL 5001
This sleek, inspired IPL hair removal system by Braun Gilette Venus looks like a device from a TV show. In fact, it looks almost exactly like the phasers in Star Trek: The Next Generation! It doesn’t work like one, however, and that’s probably for the best. I’ve already said a lot previously about how many treatments you can expect to perform and how quickly you should see results; the answers aren’t particularly different here.
What is different is that the design is much more aerodynamic, allowing you to cover an entire arm or leg in as little as eight minutes, much quicker than cheaper devices. Even better, it comes with three different modes, allowing you to adjust for sensitive skin.
Furthermore, the lamp is rated for an incredible 300,000 flashes, meaning it will effectively last forever. If used in conjunction with a razor, you may be able to see results in as little as a month. Also permanent reduction of hair will still take several months. While this is a little more expensive than previous models, it makes some serious improvements, making this well worth a little extra investment.

Braun Silk-expert IPL BD5009
The Silk-expert IPL BD5009 is very similar to the IPL 5001. It looks almost the same and promises similar results. The main difference is that this one includes a very helpful second accessory. It comes with an exfoliator that helps to loosen dead skin, making it easier for the IPL to do its job.
In pretty much every other aspect, the BD5009 is just like the 5001, so I don’t want to spend too much time going over the differences.
This is a very smooth, effective hair removal system that works pretty quickly. The exfoliator is a high-quality product, and it will increase the health of your skin, making it smoother and softer, so it is a very nice product to include. It is definitely worth paying a little more to get it.
Me My Elos Syneron PRO ULTRA Hair Removal System
The Me My Elos Syneron PRO ULTRA Hair Removal System is a little different from the previous IPL devices, but it looks no less high-tech and advanced than the Braun models. This efficient and effective device is very small, making it easy to hold in your hand, and allowing easy access to all parts of your body for convenient hair removal.
It has a cartridge of 120,000 pulses. What is impressive is that this device uses advanced technology that allows it to work even with darker skin pigments, making it suitable for women of all ethnicities. It is not a cheapo device, but the technology is so far ahead of other IPL systems that its increased price is more than understandable.
This IPL system comes with an advanced charging station and truly looks like something out of a science fiction novel. If you’re a person of color and have been disappointed with IPL systems in the past, then this is the one for you.
Tria Beauty Hair Removal Laser
The Tria Beauty Hair Removal Laser isn’t technically an IPL hair removal system – it uses an actual laser to remove your hair. But we include it because it works in a very similar way. Like IPL treatment, the 4X laser is approved by the FDA for the removal of hair follicles.
One of the advantages of using this is that it works a little more quickly than a standard IPL system. I don’t necessarily mean that you’ll see results faster, but it shouldn’t take as much time to treat your body each time.
On the other hand, because Tria uses actual lasers, the process hurts considerably more than standard IPL. I’m not sure if the results are any better in the long run, so you may want to think twice before grabbing the laser.

Me My Elos Touch Hair Removal System
Like the last Me My Elos, the Touch 200,000 Pulses Hair Removal System represents the latest in IPL technology. Unlike most IPL systems, it can be used on darker skin, meaning more women can use the technology.
This model is one of the fastest IPL removal systems out there. It can clear a leg in about ten minutes and can clear the whole body in about 30. Most women see an 89% reduction in hair after the first 90 days. There’s more to this than just an IPL system, however. This particular model also includes a removable epilator shaving cartridge and a TandaZap Acne removal system.
The MeMy Elos Touch is not for everyone. It’s quite expensive, and its increased cost means it will take a lot longer for you to reap the savings from skipping the salon. If you’re looking for the best in IPL technology, however, you can’t very well go wrong here.
Picking the right IPL system is not an easy task. This is already a technology many women will be unfamiliar with, and knowing what works and what doesn’t isn’t going to come naturally.
While we believe that the Braun Gillette Venus Silk-Expert IPL 5001 is the best value for its price, we understand if you don’t want to spend that much money. We hope this guide has helped you to be informed on the matter, and we hope that you find an IPL system you love.
