I don’t care if you shave every day or once a month: a quality razor is essential.
There are many areas of personal care a man might skimp on and come out ahead. I don’t buy expensive soap, shampoo or shaving cream and I’m doing just fine. A razor, however, is not one of those things.
I made the mistake of buying a cheap bag of razors once when I was on the road. I ended up with about a dozen cuts on my face, and I hardly looked professional. Not only was it painful and unsightly, but it was a long, tedious affair.
There are a variety of different types of razors available on the market. One popular type is the double bladed razor. This type of razor is designed to shave your face without painful and unsightly cuts or irritation of the skin.
If you’re on the lookout for a high-quality double-edged razor for travel or home use that’s going to last you a while, you’ve come to the right place. This guide will direct you to some of the highest quality double edged safety razors on the market.
Things to Consider
Safety razors were first invented around the turn of the century as a viable alternative to traditional razor blades, which required extreme care and precision to ensure you didn’t cut yourself. (It was one reason many men chose to wear facial hair).
Although there are far more shaving options today than there were at the turn of the century, double edged safety razors remain a popular choice. Here are five things to keep in mind while you shop.
1. Blade Material
This is one of the most important things to look for in a safety razor. A quality blade will use stainless steel, carbon steel or titanium. The stronger the blade, the longer it will hold its edge.
There’s a fine balance to this one, as a safety razor has to be efficiently sharp without being dangerous. I don’t think I need to tell you that a sharper blade trims your whiskers more finely and more quickly, resulting in a smoother, cleaner shave.
A good safety razor is about more than just the blade. The whole construction is critical. A lot of cheap store-bought razors use plastic handles that break easily. Any safety razor worth its weight uses a crafted metal handle.
This one isn’t critical, as the blade is the most important part. However, a lot of razors come with leather or leatherette carrying cases which make it easy to store and carry your razor safely. If you use a toiletry bag or travel a lot, you’re going to want a safety razor that comes with these.
This is actually a little different than you think. Generally speaking, there’s no reason you should pay more than $40 or $50 for a safety razor. The reason is that after a certain point, any improvements on the design become superficial, and you’ll end up paying more for no good reason.
The Best Double Edge Safety Razors
To be perfectly honest, this one really wasn’t much of competition. While there are a lot of fantastic safety razors out there, something about the style, quality and presentation of the Vikings Blade put it well ahead of the competition.

Perfecto Professional Double Edge Safety Razor
A quality shave shouldn’t have to cost a lot. If you’re looking for a good, well-designed blade for less than the price of dinner than Perfecto is just what you’re looking for. This simple, stylish razor is designed to minimize skin irritation, making it perfect for anyone with sensitive skin.
The Perfecto razor is designed with a long, 3.5-inch handle to provide superior grip and handling, giving you greater control over your shaving. The razor is designed to allocate just the right amount of pressure, providing you with a clean, smooth, soothing shave. This razor is simple, offering a classic, timeless design without breaking the bank.
The one downside to it is it doesn’t come with any spare blades. Also, since it doesn’t have a butterfly opening, changing the blades can be a hassle. Still, this is a good razor at a very reasonable price, and its solid construction will last a long time.
WEISHI Long Handle Double Edge Safety Razor
If you’re looking for a simple, elegantly designed safety razor, then you’ll enjoy the WEISHI double edge safety razor. This simple tool doesn’t come with spare blades, a carrying case or any other accessories. It is, however a very attractive and efficient safety razor available at a reasonable price.
Unlike the Perfectom, the WEISHI razor utilizes a butterfly open to ensure quick and easy blade replacement. The simple design makes it easy to maintain a perfectly clean and close shave. It is designed to provide comfort, and the long, 4.5-inch handle gives you better control over the razor, reducing the chance of injury.
The double edge blade is sharp and efficient, and the handle design is beautifully crafted, making this a razor any man would be thrilled to own. It would be nice if the razor shipped with additional blades, but it is nevertheless a very good razor at a reasonable price.
Dorco Prime Double Edge Starter Set
The Dorco Prime Starter Set is available for just a few dollars more than the WEISHU and comes in a much better package. The starter set includes not only the razor but a travel case with a mirror, making it easy to shave on the go, even in a car. The travel case also fits comfortably in a toiletry bag, making it convenient for travel. Also included are 30 double-edged replacement blades.
As far as the razor goes, the design isn’t as elegant as some other models, but it is perfectly efficient. The handle is three inches long, which isn’t as long as some but should still be long enough to provide adequate grip.
The blades are made of stainless steel and are interchangeable with most double edge safety razors, so if something happens to this razor or you decide to switch to another one, you’ll still be able to use the blades.
While I really liked the packaging the razor was sent in, I’m not as fond of the razor itself. The handle isn’t as long as I would have liked, and while the blade does provide a very close shave, it’s almost too close and can cause skin irritation and is easy to knick yourself if you’re not careful.
I’m used to cutting myself when I shave because I’m not as careful as I should be (I’m usually in a hurry), and getting knicked by this razor hurts like the dickens.

Elkaline Double Edge Safety Razor Shaving Kit
If you’re looking for a complete shaving kit but want something a little flashier than the Dorco Prime, check out this set from Elkaline. It includes a nice travel kit just like the Dorco Prime but also comes with a dedicated stand for your razor while you’re at home, leaving you with a safe and convenient place to keep your razor when it’s not in use.
The razor itself is beautiful. I’d call the handle a work of art. The blades are made of durable, sharp stainless steel, and the convenient butterfly open allows you to swap out old blades for new ones in seconds. Like the Dorco set, this also includes extra blades, but only five as opposed to thirty.
The one thing I didn’t like about this razor was the short handle. I prefer long handled safety razors as I feel like it gives me better control over the shave. This is a very nice razor and an excellent travel kit, but make sure you’re comfortable with a short handle.

Merkur Long Handled Safety Razor
I’ve always liked German things. My great-grandfather moved to the United States from Deutschland. I had a roommate from Switzerland who spoke German. I love sausages, Oktoberfest and Volkswagen. So it comes as no surprise that I also really like the German-manufactured safety razor from Merkur.
This simple razor doesn’t have the most stylish design, but it doesn’t lack in ability. The handle is four inches long, which is long enough to give me plenty of freedom and control. The blade is a little smaller than some other razors, but it is very sharp and provides an ultra-close shave.
This particular model is popular not just for men but for women who want a closer shave for their legs. My girlfriend was using a cheap disposable Bic razor, and I recommended she toss it and use this one instead. She absolutely loved it.
The razor doesn’t come with a travel pack or replacement blades, and because the razor head is smaller finding the right blades in a store can be challenging. But if you’re looking for a quality razor, this is a good pick.
Edwin Jagger Chrome Plated Double Edge Safety Razor
The Edwin Jagger DE89bl is a fine double edge safety razor with a long handle and small Derby blades. It utilizes a very Spartan design which is elegant in its simplicity.
Despite the short handle, this is an expertly balanced razor, and those experienced with safety razors will love its easy handling and clean, close shave.
The blades are very sharp, and the razor is rust resistant, so its perfect to use in the shower, so long as you don’t try to change the blades in the shower. It uses DE blades and is compatible with all Derby-style blades. The razor ships with three extra blades, so you won’t be needing more any time soon.
All in all, this is a fine razor and an excellent choice for anyone experienced in the art of wet shaving. As long as you take care of this razor, it will last you for years to come.

VIKINGS BLADE Double Edge Safety Razor
If you’re looking for the crème de la crème of safety razors, you need a Vikings Blade Chieftain razor. I don’t know if this is the finest safety razor in the world, and I’m sure its a matter of some subjective preference, but it really doesn’t get much better than this.
This gorgeous safety razor is crafted in Australia with fine Swedish steel, and every single model is handcrafted to perfection. The razor-sharp steel blades are coated in platinum, making them tougher and more beautiful than ever before. Even better, the Chieftain razor uses butterfly open razors, so even if you run out of Viking Blades or can’t find them in store, you can substitute any like blade.
Fortunately, the Chieftain ships with five additional blades, as well as a handle leatherette and suede case to store your razor and keep it safe.
The intuitive design of the blade is made to appeal to both beginners and expert alike, leaving no one dissatisfied. It even comes with an international lifetime warranty, so you know that Vikings Blade stands by their customers. This is an excellent safety razor, and I heartily recommend it.

Premier Rasage Heavy Brass Double Edge Safety Razor
The Premier Rasage safety razor is one of the most unique safety razors I have ever seen. While most razors are made of aluminum or steel with a chrome finish, this razor is made out of solid brass, giving it a very striking appearance. It’s heavier than normal razors, so there’s plenty of force going into your shave.
The razor is clearly intended to imitate a Merkur razor like the one I reviewed above. It certainly resembles one physically even with the different metal, but the balance isn’t quite right. The razor cuts close, but it doesn’t seem balanced properly, and you have to be very careful to avoid cuts.
The razor uses DE blades, so it will be compatible with any of those blades you may have. The razor works well enough and the design is certainly striking, but in my opinion, you’ll be better off skipping this and buying the real deal from Germany.

Gentleman Jon Complete Wet Shave Kit
The Gentleman Jon shaving kit is the perfect companion for the classy, modern man. The kit is similar to the Viking Blades and budget kits listed above, but this is far more complete, offering everything a man needs for the perfect wet shave.
This kit offers far more than just a razor and some spare blades. It includes a badger-hair brush, alum bar, high-quality shaving soap, a stainless steel shaving bowl and five replacement Astra brand butterfly blades. The razor is handsome and well-made and provides a clean, close shave. The soap is sandalwood and smells amazing.
If you’re new to the world of wet shaving, this is an amazing starter kit and has everything you need to get going. If you already have all the components, you need and are just looking for a razor. However, you’re probably better off buying Merkur or Vikings Blade.
Feather Stainless Steel Double Edge Safety Razor
Although I’ve included the Seki Edge Feather Razor on this list, I do so with some hesitation. My hesitation has nothing to do with quality – this is a fine razor – but with the price. I’m not sure this razor is good enough to cost three or four times more than a standard safety razor.
Don’t get me wrong. This razor is amazing. Crafted in Japan by the same masters who make samurai swords, the blade cuts so cleanly and precisely. It gets right in there for a super close shave, and it’s actually pretty hard to cut yourself unless you’re being really clumsy.
The quality is top-notch as well. Not only is the razor made out of premium stainless steel, but it is also coated in chrome with a matte finish, making it virtually indestructible.
The only downside is the price. This is not a cheap razor. While its craftsmanship is indisputably fine, I doubt most men will notice a significant difference. The razor is strong enough to last a lifetime, and on a timeline of 50 years, this is actually very reasonably priced. It is nevertheless a significant investment, and not for the faint of heart.
Shaving doesn’t have to be a chore. For men who like to rock a clean-shaven appearance, shaving should be a wonderful experience and not a hassle. That’s why there is the Vikings Blade, a double-edged safety razor truly worthy of a man. The Merkur blade is almost as good and costs about $10 less, making it easily the best safety razor under $30.
If you want to take your shaving experience to the next level, you owe it to yourself to buy a fine razor. Whether you pick Vikings Blade, Merkur or another of these fine razors, your face will be in good hands.
