When my wife and I were first expecting, I had no idea that a glider was required upholstery for the nursery. I guess that’s why baby registries are invented.

I didn’t have to make a decision on what ottoman to buy, as my mother-in-law took care of it for me. Since then, however, I have done a lot of research into the matter. Mainly because I didn’t understand why it was so important.

Are you faced with a similar sense of bewilderment as to the necessity of a particular type of furniture? Or are you completely overwhelmed by your options? If the answer to either of those questions is yes, you’ve come to the right place. The following guide will walk you through some of the best options on the market, helping you make an informed decision instead of an agonizing one.

Unless, of course, you end up agonizing over these ten choices, in which case I feel your pain.

Things to Consider

When it comes to furniture seating, I have one rule and one rule only: it has to be comfortable. I don’t care about matching colors or fashions or anything. As long as I can melt into the upholstery, I’m a happy man. Not everyone shares my carefree sentiments (my wife included), however, so here are five things you should keep in mind while shopping for a nursery glider.

1. Comfort

Yes, that’s right. While it’s always important for furniture to be comfortable, it’s especially important in this case because of the purpose of a glider. Simply put, the glider is there for the tired mother (or father, grandparent or other guardian figures) to relax and unwind with their baby in a comfortable setting before putting them to bed. If you try to do this in an unbearably uncomfortable glider, you will be sorely disappointed.

2. Assembly Required?

Most of these gliders are going to need some assembly before you can use them. Just how in-depth is this process going to be? How much will it cost to higher a professional to do your dirty work? These are just a few of the questions you need to be answered before you make your purchase, especially if you’re ordering online rather than at a traditional furniture store.

3. Color and Theme

Many parents carefully plan out their nurseries to fit a certain style or design. Do you have a specific theme or a master plan for your baby’s nursery? If yes, consider how each item of furniture would contribute or detract from your overall design.

4. Weight and Support

It is a good idea to know both how much your furniture will weigh and how much it can support. If a glider is particularly heavy, it will be harder to move should you decide to reconfigure your nursery. You should also know how much it can support. Most glider can support up to 250 pounds, but if you or a loved one is heavier than that, you will need stronger furniture.

5. Price

You’re not going to pay much less than $150 or $200 for a glider. However, you will likely have options that cost upwards of $500 or even $1000. How much can you afford to spend on a single item of furniture?

Best Nursery Glider Recliner Chairs and Ottomans Under $150

Naomi Home Brisbane Glider & Ottoman Set

I am not a furniture guru. I don’t care about style or fashion. My only concern is whether a piece of furniture is comfortable or not. The softer and plushier the cushions, the better. Since those are pretty much my only (personal) guidelines, I’d say this glider from Naomi Home met them all.

This is definitely not the nicest glider/ottoman set, but it is comfortable. The furniture is covered in polyurethane foam that is cozier than it sounds, and the color of the glider is a nice, comforting espresso. The glider can hold a weight of up to 250 pounds so that it can support most any parent and their child.

Assembly of the glider is required, although the necessary tool is provided. You can pay for expert assembly, however, and I suspect there’s more than one parent who would rather do just that than being forced to endure the stress of furniture assembly amid the expectations of childbirth.

Pros
  • Can support up to 250 pounds
  • Polyurethane upholstery
Cons
  • Challenging assembly

Storkcraft Premium Hoop Glider and Ottoman

One of the great joys of decorating a nursery is the thrill of picking a color scheme and painting it. (I actually love painting my home.) One of the great challenges of decorating a nursery is the hunt for furniture that compliments your exotic choice.

That is why I love the Storkcraft Premium Hoop Glider and Ottoman. The cushions are available in eight different colors, including two variations each of pink and blue, as well as gray, chocolate, beige and yellow gingham. In addition, the wooden frame is available in half a dozen finishes that include white, cherry and espresso.

As far as the upholstery itself is concerned, the cushion is made from denim and is quite luxuriously plush and comfortable. Both the glider and the ottoman rock back and forth, and there are handy side pockets on the glider to store baby toys, chocolates for mommy or any other essentials you may wish to tuck away.

In short, this is a very comfortable chair with a lot of customization options available for a reasonable price. If you’re feeling the financial pressure of getting ready for your new arrival, this is a fantastic choice that won’t break the bank.

Pros
  • Can support up to 250 pounds
  • Denim upholstery
  • Easy assembly
Cons
  • Does not recline

Baby Relax Glider and Ottoman

Despite the name of the chair, this gliding rocker is not, in fact, patio furniture, but rather a stylish and somewhat old-fashioned looking glider that would be a perfect fit for an older home. The chair is upholstered with a comfortable microfabric set in a rich, chocolate color.

The rocker is fully upholstered, with padded arms and an ottoman for extra comfort. The rocking motion is very smooth, working double-time to not only sooth your baby to sleep but to relax you as well. The chair is amply padded for your comfort.

There’s nothing extraordinary about this rocker, but it has a charming, attractive aesthetic, is comfortable and very reasonably priced. All of these things combine to make a glider that is well worth the price.

Pros
  • Can support up to 250 pounds
  • Microfiber upholstery
  • Easy assembly
Cons
  • Upholstery on the arms is somewhat thin

Dream On Me Savannah Glider and Ottoman

As a brand, Dream On Me is perhaps best known for their cribs, but they also make rocking chairs, as evidenced by their Savannah glider and ottoman. This plush, comfy glider is soft and easy to melt into after a long day.

There are a variety of available finishes, including white chocolate (white wooden frame with chocolate cushions. The glider rocks easily enough and the ottoman is great for putting my feet up after a long day.

However, I have one serious reservation about this glider. According to the manufacturer, the recommended maximum weight is a mere 150 pounds. I’m not a particularly large man, but I still weigh 165 in, and my wife weighed slightly more than that after giving birth. I’ve heard you can push the chair to around 200 pounds, but that still seems like a poor design choice to me.

Pros
  • Microfiber upholstery
  • Easy assembly
Cons
  • Glider is only rated for 150 pounds

Graco Parker Semi-Upholstered Glider and Nursing Ottoman

This custom Tuscany Glider from Stork Craft is very much like the other Stork Craft glider. It has a variety of cushions and wood finishes to choose from, leaving you with dozens of ways to customize your very own nursery glider set.

This comfy, deeply cushioned glider has six fabric colors and four wood finishes to choose from for a total of two dozen different combinations. The polyester cushions are relaxing, and the wooden frame is augmented with wooden bearings for improved durability.

This is a pretty great piece of furniture. It’s easy to assemble, and it comes with a one-year warranty. It isn’t as comfortable as a couple of the other gliders, but it’s still a great choice and is fairly affordable. Recommended.

Pros
  • Can support up to 250 pounds
  • Polyester upholstery
  • Easy assembly
Cons
  • Ottoman doesn’t look very nice

Storkcraft Hoop Glider and Ottoman

This chair is so comfortable. It is fully upholstered, with no visible wood, and it is upholstered with a soft gray linen. This is the first glider to almost look like a standard armchair, the telltale gliding base the only giveaway to its true nature.

Unlike most gliders, this one has a built-in reclining mechanism, making it even more relaxing than many other gliders. Although it doesn’t come with an ottoman, one could easily purchase one separately or simply leave your feet on the ground as you lean back with your baby. The base also swivels 360 degrees so you can take in the full view of the nursery.

There’s a lot to like about this glider and not much to dislike. It’s very comfortable and easy to recline. Perhaps the only complaint I have is that its modern, contemporary appearance might look out of place in a nursery. That, however, is merely a matter of opinion.

Pros
  • Can support up to 250 pounds
  • Linen-look upholstery
  • Easy assembly
Cons
  • Weighs 107 pounds
  • Does not come with an ottoman

Best Nursery Glider Recliner Chairs and Ottomans Under $250

Stork Craft Tuscany Custom Glider/Ottoman

This glider/ottoman set from Stork Craft is the epitome of soft and comfortable. The microfiber cushions seem to swallow you whole when you sit down.

One of the nice things about these cushions is that they are easy to clean, as long as you act fast enough. I also really liked the ottoman, which has a pull-out stand to help it stay firm if you don’t want it to rock.

I was amazed at how luxuriously comfortable this glider was. It was a lot better than I was expecting for the price. If you’re looking for a comfortable glider and don’t have much to spend, I wholeheartedly recommend this model. If you can’t swing it financially, there are some very cozy gliders for less, but this is truly the best bang for your buck.

Pros
  • Can support up to 250 pounds
  • Microfiber upholstery
  • Easy assembly
Cons
  • Can stain if not cleaned immediately

Baby Relax Alexis Swivel Gliding Recliner

While the Baby Relax Alexis Swivel Gliding Recliner doesn’t offer customizable cushions and finishes, it does provide a superior seating experience. It is also visually striking.

Like other high-end gliders, this glider uses metal bearings for added durability and to improve the rocking experience. The plush cushions are soft and comfortable and made out of microfiber. The chair rocks very smoothly.

While this is a nice glider, I feel like it’s missing something at the same time. Basically, there’s nothing about this glider to make it stand out from other models. It’s definitely comfortable and well-made, but it lacks that special something that makes it truly great.

Pros
  • Can support up to 250 pounds
  • Microfiber upholstery
  • Easy assembly
Cons
  • A little too expensive

Baby Relax The Kelcie Nursery Swivel Glider Chair and Ottoman Set

There’s a pretty significant jump from the Stork Craft glider to the magnificent upholstery of Baby Relax. While it looks like a fairly standard living room armchair, it’s a very comfortable, plush glider with excellent swivel action and a luxurious matching ottoman.

The glider is thickly padded through and through, making it very cozy. The upholstery is made out of soft microfiber and is available in three relaxing colors. It features lumbar support but unfortunately does not recline.

Although the chair and ottoman combine to weigh almost 100 pounds, it’s a small price to pay for how soft and plush it is. Assembly isn’t difficult, and although this is a moderately expensive glider/ottoman set, it’s definitely worth it.

Pros
  • Can support up to 300 pounds
  • Microfiber upholstery
  • Easy assembly
Cons
  • Weighs 88 pounds

Best Nursery Glider Recliner Chairs and Ottomans Under $600

Dutailier Colonial 0380 Glider Multiposition-Lock Recline with Ottoman

The Dutailier Colonial 0380 glider from Dutalier costs a lot more than I could afford, but it is an amazing chair. It’s very comfortable, and the quality is excellent, and it has a very stylish design.

The taupe upholstery is luxuriously soft and comfortable and is easy to melt into. The chair rocks very gently, and the all-wooden frame is well crafted and has a non-toxic finish.

This is a spectacular chair, but it is quite expensive and probably outside the budget of many parents. If you can afford to buy it, it’s worth it, but the quality isn’t so much better than some other glider/ottoman sets to justify stretching your budget to fit this.

Pros
  • Can support up to 350 pounds
  • High Quality Taupe upholstery
Cons
  • Challenging assembly

Conclusion

Picking the right ottoman for your nursery is a complicated equation that requires you to juggle economy, function, aesthetics, décor and the wildly different tastes of you and your partner. The Graco-Parker ottoman is ridiculously plush and comfortable. It’s not the height of style, but it’s soft enough to make up for it.

Of course, I couldn’t fault you for going with the Dutailier Grande if you could afford it, and I like the many different color options for the Stork Craft models. No matter which glider you choose, I hope it is a perfect match for your nursery.
